BIOGRAPHY OF THE MONTH
On November 5th 2377 Horatio Black was born to Starfleet
officers Lieutenant General Alexander Black and Commo-
dore Sophie Black in the family home in Arlington, Virginia
on Earth where his mother worked in a Starfleet Medical
Research Facility. Alexander was a distinguished General
in the Starfleet MACOs and highly decorated. He was par-
ticularly famed for his ruthless command style and strict
approach to running his units.
An investigation was launched and after months of follow-
ing leads neither Starfleet Security nor Starfleet Intel-
ligence had enough evidence or enough of a case to bring
before the Office of the JAG. Horatio; although only ten
requested he could keep the work that the two branches
had found as a memory of his mother which they allowed.
He now keeps these files under lock and key as the only
connection remaining to his mother’s legacy. Since then
Horatio has found it incredibly difficult to form emotional
attachments because he finds it difficult to cope with the
fear of loss and never wanting to relive the pain that he
did that day however this has since changed after he met
Violet Skye in 2409. It was at this time that James told
him that his mother always wanted him to remember the
importance of trust, loyalty and humanity; all qualities
which she had taught him during his early childhood. As he
was now the responsibility of Commodore Stone Hora-
tio now resided on the Mars Colony and attended a local
school there. He often came into contact with a Klingon
boy named Mek`tor who was known by the children as
the local bully and often beat the other children. After a
few months of watching the Klingon’s behaviour Horatio
challenged him to a fight to defend the weaker members
in the group and was subsequently beaten to a bloody pulp
and ended up in the infirmary with broken ribs, cuts and
bruises and a broken leg. After the recovery however and
remembering the values his mother had taught him he
took up mok’bara, a style of Klingon martial arts and com-
bined this with mek’leth sword fighting techniques from
a series of manuals he found in the library. He then found
Mek`tor bullying a younger human boy and stepped in.
After a gruelling challenge in the training arena after dark
it was the Klingon that ended up in the infirmary and was
so shamed he soon quieted down and avoided confronta-
tion with the other children.
It was also during this time that Horatio took up a num-
ber of other sports and fighting styles. He taught himself
several different forms of martial arts and composed his
own style; Kata. This was a unique form of hand-to-hand
combat that encompassed what he considered to be the
best bits from Terran, Vulcan, Romulan and Klingon forms
of martial arts. Horatio also took up the old Earth sport of
Fencing and became highly proficient in the Epée which
resulted in him becoming the Colony Champion in the
annual competition. Although Horatio tried his best to in-
teract and form relationships with his classmates he found
social interaction very difficult and this continued at home
where it was even harder for Horatio to associate with his
guardian. This resulted in an almost estranged relationship
between Horatio and the rest of the world he lived in.
Later in that same year Horatio applied to the Starfleet
Academy with a letter of recommendation from his Coun-
sellor. He sent this off to the Academy in San Francisco on
Earth which was accepted. He was then invited to under-
take the entrance competition exams and for the first time
since his mother’s funeral he made the trip to San Fran-
cisco to complete them. After surviving the initial round of
tests Horatio was exhausted as per the norm for this stage
of the entrance competition. He was then given a physical
